The Faculty of Special Engineering of the University of Žilina (FSE) is an educational institution with a long-term tradition. It exists for more than 60 years as a part of the University of Žilina. In the course of years, the objectives and contents of the study changed according to requirements of the society.

At present, FSE has managerial and technological orientation; it focuses on solution of risk and crises phenomena in various spheres of public, social, natural and economical environments as well as on solution of tasks of internal security, protection of inhabitants and property and critical infrastructure protection.

The European Severe Storms Laboratory (ESSL) is a non-profit research institute located in Wessling, Germany.

ESSL's mission is to make Europe more resilient to severe weather. We carry out research on all aspects of extreme weather including climate research.

ESSL supports the research community by operating the European Severe Weather Database (ESWD.eu) and (co-) organizing the European Conferences on Severe Storms (ECSS.eu).

In addition, ESSL provides a platform for training to Europe's weather forecasters and evaluates tools and techniques for severe weather forecasting at the ESSL Testbed.

The Freie Universität Berlin (FUB) is one of the largest universities in Germany, awarded the status of Excellence by the German Research Funding organization, DFG.

The main research areas of the Institute for Meteorology (IfM) are weather forecasting, climate research, environmental impacts, remote sensing and the stratosphere.

It is contributing to the national initiative on decadal climate forecasting (MiKlip) with several projects in the fields of validation, climate processes and regionalization.

Two members of the initiative steering board (Ulrich Cubasch and Uwe Ulbrich) are full professors at the institute. IfM has been contributing to several EU projects on climate modelling and impacts, such as ENSEMBLES and CIRCE.

Trinity College Dublin was founded by royal charter in 1592 and is recognised internationally as Ireland’s premier university. Approximately 1,500 research staff are employed with the number of postgraduate students in the region of 3,800. The Department of Civil, Structural & Environmental Engineering, Trinity College comprises 18 academic staff, 6 experienced researchers and over 60 Ph.D students. The research conducted in the Department is internationally recognised and its publication rate and success in attracting research income has been benchmarked internally and is comparable with the output of five rated research groups in the UK (under the RAE exercise).

Professor Alan O’Connor holds a PhD in degree from Trinity College Dublin where he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering. He has authored over 120 technical papers. He is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Engineers of Ireland. He is the Research Coordinator for Ireland in the Forum of European National Highway Research Laboratories (FEHRL).

Professor Brian Caulfield is an Assistant Professor in transport engineering in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, Trinity College. He has published over 80 technical peer reviewed conference and journal papers on various aspects of transportation engineering and economics. He also sits on a number of national and international committees in the areas of transportation engineering and economics.

The ability of RAIN’s response plan to transcend borders is guaranteed by the multi-disciplinary consortium. The project grouping has expertise in climatology, operational analysis, transportation economics, risk analysis and mitigation, emergency planning, transportation engineering as well as engineering design and assessment. The outputs from the project will result in enhanced safety and reliability of critical infrastructure networks in the case of major weather induced disruptions and will address European policy in the areas of safety and security, inter-modality and emergency response planning.
